MandrakeKwikis

Here are some Kwikis for the Mandrake distribution of Linux.

  • MandrakeMove is a portable "live CD" distribution supporting personal information stored on a USB key drive.

Mandrake 9.2 WARNING

Oct 26, 2003
Some folks are seeing posts in forums on Mandrake 9.2 permanently disabling some models of LG CDROM drives (and not LG DVD or LG CD/RW drives). These drives are apparently found in many Dell computers. BEWARE<b>, this is a real problem, if you have a LG CDROM drive do /not install Mandrake 9.2 at all (not even using a network install).

Mandrake has posted some info about it here: http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/lgerrata.php3

Update Nov 14, 2003
LG has released some firmware updates to various model numbers (they are noted specifically in the list), and a restoration procedure for previously affected drives. All users are encouraged to upgrade the firmware on their CD-ROM systems prior to installing or upgrading Mandrake Linux 9.2. They also provide a recovery procedure for the damaged drives.

Firmware updates & restoration procedure are available from LG's website and from Dell Support.

Apparently, LG "repurposed" a ATAPI standard command FLUSH_CACHE to trigger writing new firmware. Not the same at all. Dell was mentioned as a OEM vendor that commonly uses LG drives that are susceptible to this problem.

Mandrake Linux 9.2 Installation Notes

To determine the make and model of the CD-ROM in your system, you can use dmesg to view the information. For instance, if your CD-ROM is /dev/hdc, you could use "dmesg | grep hdc" to see the make and model of CD-ROM in your computer. You can also use 'hdparm' to view the details of your device, which should also indicate the firmware revision. For example, use 'hdparm -i /dev/hdc' to obtain the information on the drive /dev/hdc (look for the " FwRev" string). This will allow you to determine if you have a problem drive prior to installing Mandrake 9.2.

It may also be possible to obtain the model and firmware revision from the BIOS during POST.
