MicrosoftFUDFUD - Fear, Uncertainty, and DoubtThis is a tactic used to discredit a competing idea, agenda, product, or solution, and is particularly effective in a business setting by marketing departments. It attempts, through mis-information and dis-information, to paint the target as having a higher risk of failure and hidden costs in an effort to promote one's own idea, agenda, product, or solution by making them be perceived, in contrast, as a safer, more successful choice. Microsoft long had a marketing strategy of using FUD to discredit its emerging competitors to its customers to continue its long tradition of maintaining its monopoly through both legal and illegal means.
