Decreasing Application Load Time

  • Install the "prelink" application for your distribution.
  • As "root", edit the file '/etc/default/prelink'
  • At about the 6th line from the top you'll see the following:
PRELINKING=unknown
  • Change it to:
PRELINKING=yes
  • Save your changes.
  • As "root", run the daily prelink job, '/etc/cron.daily/prelink'
  • This will take a while for its first run. Basically, it is doing a cache of all libraries. In the Windows world, this is how the Shell Explorer does it and caches all of its libraries (called "DLL"s, after their filename extension).
  • Going forward, the daily 'prelink' job performs a quick update run each night around midnight after you've just performed the initial, main run. A full update is also scheduled every 14 days.

WARNING: In all distributions, if you perform any system updates, this means that quite possibly that some or many of your system libraries will have been updated. So you will need to manually run /etc/cron.daily/prelink after completing your update in order to update the prelink caches.

  • To undo prelink, simply uninstall it using your system administration application (Synaptic, apt-get, Xandros Networks, rpm, yum, etc.).
  • You will need to edit /etc/default/prelink and change PRELINKING=yes to PRELINKING=no and rerun /etc/cron.daily/prelink as root once more to complete the removal of prelink.
