Upgrading from Xandros 2

Or installing on top of another Debian OS for that matter. Do yourself a favor, and read the DebianKwikis entry on:

How do I replicate a Debian system?

Or, what is the easiest method of installing on a new computer, the same packages that you have on an existing computer?

You should save that list of packages, and then after upgrading, restore them to your new system.

Otherwise, you must be careful if you are upgrading an existing system with lots of custom software installed as the results may not be what you expected! Especially if you've installed packages without any package management (such as from source or in-place binaries). Read about finding this out the hard way at Xandros3UpGradeNOT.

How do I load a hardware module Xandros missed?

For example, the hardware detection seems to miss the Initio SCSI controller I have. All that's needed to fix this is to add the module name you want loaded to the end of the /etc/modules file. This is a lot simpler than it was in earlier versions of Xandros, and should apply to other 2.6 kernel Linux distributions.

Installing on an IBM ThinkPad 600x

There were some issues in the past with CD ROM drives acting strange when DMA was enabled during the installation process. Try turning off dma:

  • When booting from the CD press SHIFT, and then TAB
  • Add the 'ide=nodma' option to the bootup menu
  • If that doesn't work you may have a flaky CD
