XandrosAnd ISA SoundCards

Adding ISA sound cards to Xandros

My sound chip was not recognized by the install. I know that it works with ess1868 driver (Creative SoundBlaster clone), which is supported by Xandros, but in my environment I don't know how to get it to work. This same laptop has had working sound with RH6.2 and RH7.0 with the following settings:

base I/O=0x220, IRQ=5, DMA=1, MPU401 I/O=0x330

Im going to assume that this is a ISA card since you were giving it I/O parameters. Xandros doesn't autodetect/configure ISA devices (lamentably) but it is pretty straight forward to get this working for you.

Login as Adminisrator (or root) and use your favorite text editor to add this line to the end of the /etc/devices/drivers file:

99 sb io=0x220 irq=5 dma=1 mpu_io=0x330

Then run the following commands in the console as root:

xangenmodules
/etc/init.d/modutils start

If it does not seem to work at first, remove the mpu_io=0x330 and retry.

If all goes well your sound will now be setup and be initialiazed when the machine starts.

Q: What about a crystal systems CS4237B and using the ad1848 driver? It works on RedHat 6.2 and similarly on Libranet and Knoppix. If I 'modprobe ad1848' and 'modprobe cs4232', the sound plays until next boot, when I must again modprobe. Post on boot says soundcard active. What should I do to get Xandros to remember to modprobe to work always?

For your soundcard with the CS4237B we need this in the /etc/devices/drivers instead:

98 ad1848
99 cs4232 io=534 irq=5 dma=1

If you have yet some other card, replace with whatever you think your modules.conf line(s) should be, but place them instead into Xandros' /etc/devices/drivers file. Don't forget to run 'xangenmodules && /etc/init.d/modutils start'
