XandrosKwiki- InstallFonts

Adapted from the Xandros Forums How to add fonts to Xandros?

Quick Instructions for Experts

To install a font, say Village.ttf:

  • (you need to be root...)
apt-get install ttmkfdir
cp Village.ttf /usr/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType
cd /usr/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType
ttmkfdir -o fonts.scale
mkfontdir
  • The next command won't work unless you type "xhost +" (without the quotes) when logged in as normal user.
xset fp+ /usr/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType

Detailed Instructions

  • Obtain your font files
    • Extract them if necessary if they were in an archive file like zip or tar.
    • There should be one file with the extension .ttf for each font.
  • Install the package ttmkfdir.
    • You can do this with Xandros Networks.
    • Search for a package called ttmkfdir and install it.
    • You can also use Xandros Update if you prefer.
  • Copy the font files to the directory usr/lib/X11/fontsTrueType.
    • You can use the Xandros File Manager in Administrator Mode to do this.
    • From the launch menu select Applications -> System -> Administrator Tools -> Xandros File Manager (Administrator).
  • Run these commands as Administrator from a console.
    • From the launch menu select Applications -> System -> Administrator Tools -> Console (Administrator):
cd /usr/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType
ttmkfdir -o fonts.scale
mkfontdir
  • From the file manager you should check that in the directory usr/lib/X11/fontsTrueType you now see the files fonts.scale and fonts.dir as well as the font files you copied.
  • You can now notify the X server about the new fonts by running this command from a console (or simply log out and back in again):
xset fp+ /usr/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType
  • You can check that the new fonts are available by using some program that has a font browser, such as any of the following:
    • Launch Control Center, select Display and then Fonts, and then click on Choose...
    • Run Applications -> Accessories -> Text Editor, select Settings -> Configure Editor... and then Fonts.
    • Launch Applications -> OpenOffice.org -> Word Processor and use the font drop down list in the tool bar.

Other

It is also a good idea to do the following (also found somewhere on the forum):

The fonts that are supported for antialiasing are configured in the file /etc/X11/XftConfig. By default that is just /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1. Try adding lines near the top of the file to specify the locations of the fonts you want to use, e.g.

dir "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType"
dir "/usr/share/fonts/truetype/openoffice"

You need to log out and back in again so that X restarts and picks up the changes.

Type1 Fonts

To add Type1 fonts, instead of using the 'ttmkfdir' and 'mkfontdir' commands, you will need to use the 'type1inst' command (it does both). This command is in the 'type1inst' package. Use apt-get install type1inst to get it.

Setting your Desktop Fonts

This setting is not located in the Control Center -> Display -> Font Section as one might think.

You must go to Control Center -> General Settings -> Appearance to set the standard font and the color used by the desktop icons.
